Hollywood actress Hilary Swank was introduced to flaxseed by her trainer in the movie Million Dollar Baby and used it to gain 10 pounds of muscle (but no fat) for her Oscar nominated role. Hilary took it in vast quantities and she says it increased her energy levels and allowed her to build up the membranes around the muscle, acting as a building block for healthy tissue. If used in smaller quantities flaxseed can be used for weight management.

WHAT IS FLAX?

Flax is the common name for members of the Linaceae, a family of annual herbs.

Flax plants grow to 4 ft (120 cm) in height and bear blue or white flowers that mature into bolls containing 10 flaxseeds each.

FLAX SEED and the Common Cold

With flu season coming around the corner, it is good to know that your daily intake of flaxseed is helping to prevent the "bug".

Flaxseed is by far the richest source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) or "omega-3" fatty acid. Omega-3 is an "essential" fatty acid because it is essential to the growth and nurturing of the cells in our bodies and cannot be manufactured by the body. Research indicates that ALA improves immunity, the body's ability to defend itself against foreign substances like a flu bug. Studies have also shown that alpha-linolenic acid may lower the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Both the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization recommend an increased daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

Basically, flaxseed gets the immune system functioning at full capacity by being an excellent laxative and expectorant that soothes irritated tissues, controls coughing and relieves pain.

Flaxseed tea is a valuable remedy for colds, croup and catarrhal diseases. It has a soothing and healing effect upon the raw and sore membranes of the throat, and upon the digestive and urinary organs. Take a few tablespoonfuls of this tea when needed to allay the soreness in the throat and bronchi. The best way to prepare this tea is to boil a tablespoon of flaxseed in three cups of water for five minutes, then strain and add some honey and lemon juice.

Flaxseed is highly recommended as an addition to cough medicines.

COMMENTS

I am sure that many people have not tried Interflax because they are concerned they may get some kind of reaction from taking flax.  I must admit that after taking two tablespoons of Interflax for two months I did get a reaction.

Quote from the Flax Council website:

Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratios

"In particular, it's the ratio of Omega-6 essential fatty acids to 0mega-3 essential fatty acids that's important. Cordain said many diets today show a ratio of 15 to 1 or worse, when the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 should be less than 5 to 1. That lower ratio likely matches what Paleolithic man consumed, based on a close look at food sources available thousands of years ago."
